Educating for life: the Year 9 experience

Every Year 9 government school student in Victoria will participate in our new Year 9 Experience over the course of a full term, offering a dynamic and engaging new learning experience, in and out of the classroom.

Adolescence is a crucial time for students as they move towards adulthood and independence. For many students this period is characterised by a lack of interest in school, poor behaviour and for some students, can lead to more serious disengagement from learning and school.

Adolescence is a crucial time for students as they move towards adulthood and independence. For many students this period is characterised by a lack of interest in school, poor behaviour and for some students, can lead to more serious disengagement from learning and school.

International research has identified that in Year 9, the more traditional methods of teaching and learning may not successfully engage the majority of students and meet their needs.

That’s why a future Brumby Labor Government will provide $208.2 million for the Year 9 Experience for students in all government schools to take learning beyond the classroom.

The Year 9 Experience is an intensive personal development and life skills course for Year 9 students in government schools that will run over a whole term, with a centrepiece two-week residential program.

The AEU has welcomed today's announcement by the Brumby Government to invest over $208.2 million over four years, if re-elected, in a program designed to keep Year 9 students engaged in their education.

"Year 9 is a critical year for engagement and the Brumby Government's investment will ensure that students receive the attention they deserve during this important time in their education," said AEU Victorian Branch president, Mary Bluett.

"This is a well targeted investment and equates to around $2000 extra for every Year 9 student.

"The 'Year 9 Experience' will take students out of the classroom and provide them with a new learning experience, which will help keep students engaged during a period where many students disengage from learning.

"Today's announcement builds on the $194.3m previously committed to boost vocational education and training in secondary schools. These two policy announcements represent a significant investment in secondary schooling and our students will benefit," Ms Bluett said.
