VCOSS CEO Cath Smith commends the ALP announcement of $28 million to provide flexible programs to keep vulnerable children and young people engaged in education.
“We know that leaving school early is often the precursor to poor life outcomes and long term unemployment. This commitment recognises the critical importance of schools providing more flexible, responsive and adaptive learning environments and will mean that young people have every opportunity to achieve their potential,” says Ms Smith.
“The commitment to provide additional funding for 900 students and 10 new alternate settings for 600 students will better support the learning of vulnerable children and young people. This commitment builds on the recent $11 million for the Better Futures program to trail innovative tools and service approaches that target keeping vulnerable young people engaged in education.’
“Also welcome is the commitment to 50 Home School Liaison Officers. Linking young people and their families to social services and supports and helping to bridge the gap between young people, their families, schools and local community sector organisations is a positive way to support young people to remain engaged.”
“VCOSS also welcomes the continuation of the Victorian Schools Plan which is improving the physical infrastructure of public schools. Having access to quality facilities is critical to creating a productive learning environment.”
“Lastly, VCOSS is pleased to see the focus on innovative approaches to delivering curriculum to rural students through access to video conferencing.”
