Hulls resigns from Parliament

Former Deputy Premier and Attorney General Rob Hulls announced today that he was leaving State Parliament after almost 16 years as the Member for Niddrie.
Mr Hulls, who is Deputy Leader of the Opposition, said that it had been an absolute privilege to have been the Member for Niddrie for almost 16 years and to have served in many portfolios including Attorney General for 11 years and Deputy Premier for three and a half years.
“Public office and the ability to serve the public is an honour. I would encourage any young person who is passionate about changing the world, passionate about helping others, passionate about making Victoria a better and fairer place to get active, get involved and get elected. You won’t regret it.”
But Mr Hulls said that serving in public office also carried with it a responsibility of knowing when to go.
“About six months ago I had a pretty serious health scare. This made me reassess my future and I concluded that I would not run at the 2014 election.
“As Deputy Leader of the Opposition I believe that, having made that decision, the best thing I could do for the Party was to leave the Parliament now. This will allow Daniel Andrews and his team to further renew.”
Mr Hulls thanked the ALP, Niddrie branch members, his staff, former Premiers Steve Bracks and John Brumby, and Leader of the Opposition Daniel Andrews for their support.
“Daniel is a smart, articulate, gutsy and compassionate politician who will make a great Premier. Already he has exposed the huge budget cuts of this Government which have affected frontline services and he will continue to hold the Government to account. I wish him and his team well.”
Mr Hulls said that his decision to resign from Parliament was not an easy one but he firmly believed it was the correct one.
“I hope my decision to retire from Parliament will be a further step in returning Labor to Government in Victoria.”
