Cycling and walking in Moreland has received a $1.1 million Brumby Government boost for the extension of the Upfield shared path.
Mr Pallas said the Upfield shared bike and pedestrian path was used by around 800 cyclists every day.
“The Upfield path is the most popular off-road bike path in the City of Moreland, providing a vital north-south route and links to the Capital City Trail, the Merri Creek and Moonee Ponds Creek trails,” Mr Pallas said.
“The extended path complements the existing road, tram, train and bus networks and provides a safe alternative to Sydney Road, reducing the risk of accidents for both cyclists and motorists.
“The Brumby Government encourages the use of healthy, sustainable modes of transport, and is investing an extra $72 million over the next 10 years to improve networks for walking and cycling.”
The existing path runs along the Upfield Rail Line, parallel to Sydney Road between Coburg North and Parkville.
The new 1.6 kilometre section takes the path through Fawkner, from Boundary Road to Box Forest Road.

Mr Pallas said the Brumby Government had also invested in new traffic signals at the intersection of Sydney Rd and Lorne Street, improving safety at the intersection and access to the new section of path.
“Pedestrian operated signals have also been installed at Park Street, Dawson Street and Bell Street, which is a major safety boost for cyclists and pedestrians using this busy route,” Mr Pallas said.
Christine Campbell, Member for Pascoe Vale, said the Upfield path was a popular route for the local community travelling to and from school, work and leisure activities.
“The extended path to Box Forest Road gives residents who live in the north of the municipality more opportunities to get active and out and about in their community,” Ms Campbell said.
“The extension of the bike path is a tribute to our local cyclists including Moreland BUG and Moreland City Council who have worked tirelessly with me to get this project delivered.”
Mr Pallas and Ms Campbell thanked the Moreland City Council, Bicycle Victoria, VicRoads and members of the community for making this important local project happen.
