Peninsula Hockey Centre scores with new pavilion

Hockey in Frankston and Mornington received a boost today with the opening of a new pavilion at the Peninsula Hockey Centre at the Monash University campus in Frankston.

Sport and Recreation Minister James Merlino officially opened the $800,000 pavilion today and said the facility would provide better access and more opportunities for the local community and sporting groups who use the centre.

“The Brumby Government is taking action to ensure all Victorian communities have the facilities they need to encourage healthy, active involvement in sport and recreation,” Mr Merlino said.

“This new multi-purpose pavilion includes new male and female change-rooms, toilet amenities with access for people of all abilities, an umpire’s room and storage space.

“The Peninsula Hockey Centre is the only community synthetic hockey facility in the Frankston and Mornington areas, catering to numerous hockey clubs, sporting associations and schools in the region as well as the surrounding suburbs of Cranbourne and Langwarrin.”

The Brumby Government provided $175,000 for the pavilion project as part of the Community Facility Funding Program.

Mr Merlino said research showed that participation in hockey was on the rise, with the pavilion to open up access to the multi-purpose facility for more members of the community.

“The pavilion will provide a facility for more community activities and competitive matches in the area, resulting in increased participation in sport,” he said.

“We want to provide more opportunities for people to stay healthy and active, which is what the Brumby Government’s $150 million Go for your life campaign is all about – getting more Victorians involved in sport and recreation in their local community.”

“We want to provide more opportunities for people to stay healthy and active."

Member for Frankston Alistair Harkness MP said the new pavilion was a boost for the local community that had strongly supported the project.

“Local sports facilities are vital to the social fabric, strength and wellbeing of any community and by improving the quality of those facilities we are encouraging greater participation for all Victorians,” Mr Harkness said.

“The local councils have worked closely with Monash University and local sporting clubs to ensure the new pavilion meets the needs of the community – the pavilion is the excellent result of everyone working together.”

The Brumby Government’s Community Facility Funding Program has invested $170 million through to improve more than 1870 sport and recreation facilities across Victoria.
