New police station for Yarra Junction

A new $1.3 million environmentally sustainable police station at Yarra Junction was opened today by Police Minister Bob Cameron.

“The Brumby Government is taking action to boost police resources and services across Victoria,” Mr Cameron said.

“We have provided $400 million to rebuild more than 150 police stations in Victoria’s biggest ever police station building program.

“Overall, we have given Victoria Police a record budget of $1.75 billion. This Brumby Government investment has helped reduce crime across the state by 24.5 per cent since 2000-1.”

Attending the opening, Member for Gembrook, Tammy Lobato said crime in Yarra Junction and surrounding areas was cut by 9.2 per cent over the last year.

“This is good news for locals and the police who are helping to improve community safety,” Ms Lobato said.

“The new station is environmentally sustainable, including being equipped with a 4000 litre capacity water tank.

“This new station will play a vital role in the Yarra Junction community and for the surrounding area.”

Mr Cameron said boosting infrastructure, equipment and resources highlighted the Brumby Government’s commitment to supporting police men and women in Victoria.

“Victoria has the lowest crime rate in the nation. We want to continue to drive crime rates down and increase community safety,” Mr Cameron said.

“We now have more police than ever before, with an additional 1400 police officers added to the beat since 1999 and a further 350 to be added by 2010.”
