$8 million and 125 jobs as Frankston foreshore vision comes to life

The vision for Frankston Central Activities District (CAD) is one step closer thanks to $8 million from the Brumby Labor Government.

Visiting the Kananook Creek Boulevard site today to inspect works, Planning Minister Justin Madden said significant progress is being made on the redevelopment help revitalise Frankston’s town centre and foreshore.

“The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to create jobs and revitalise Melbourne’s suburbs,” Mr Madden said. “This project is employing 125 people, which is great for the economy and the new pedestrian boardwalk will add to this vibrant public space.”

“This project is employing 125 people, which is great for the economy and the new pedestrian boardwalk will add to this vibrant public space. The boulevard will be used by Frankston residents and workers as well as visitors to the area.

“This shows what can be achieved when state and local governments work closely together with input from the community to achieve a common goal to create liveable, sustainable communities.”

Mr Madden commended Frankston City Council for recognising the potential of this under-used space and reorienting the town centre towards its best asset – the foreshore.

The Kananook Creek Boulevard project runs between Beach and Davey Streets.  Construction of a bike path between Beach and Wells Streets is almost complete.

Other features of the project are a new plaza area for community events, canopy trees, public seating and artwork, feature lighting, rain gardens and a new bridge crossing from Davey Street to the yacht club on Long Island.

“The new Kananook Creek Boulevard is a key component of the Frankston CAD and Frankston TAFE to Bay Structure Plan. This is just one of a range of projects supported by the Brumby Labor Government’s Melbourne @ 5 million and Melbourne 2030 strategies to manage our city’s growth,” he said.

Member for Frankston, Alistair Harkness MP said the Frankston CAD is a good example of a centre that has been designed to support liveable, sustainable communities where people have easy access to jobs, facilities and transport.

“By creating CBD-like centres, people have the opportunity to live and work in the same area, reducing the need to commute and increasing time spent with family and friends,” Mr Harkness said.

The Kananook Creek Boulevard project is a partnership between the Brumby Labor Government and Frankston City Council.

The Kananook Creek Boulevard Project is on schedule to be completed in time for summer 2009.
