Gisborne Secondary College opens $3.75 million centre

The centrepiece of a $3.75 million redevelopment at Gisborne Secondary College – two state-of-the-art buildings known as “learning neighbourhoods” – were officially opened today by Education Minister Bronwyn Pike.

Ms Pike said the Brumby Government is taking action on education across the state by investing in school infrastructure.

“Education remains the Brumby Government’s number one priority which is why we are investing in the best resources young Victorians need to have the best learning opportunities,” Ms Pike said.

“The new buildings have turned the notion of a traditional classroom on its head and added a new dimension to interactive learning and created a vibrant and inspiring learning environment for years 7 and 8 students.

“This large-scale redevelopment has created a thriving learning community where every single day new ways of learning and teaching are helping students and teachers become the best they can be.

“We want to provide every opportunity we can to every student across the state to reach their full potential and having great new learning facilities such as this is a key way of achieving that.”

Ms Pike said the project was an example of the work being undertaken as part of the Brumby Government’s $1.9 billion Victorian Schools Plan to rebuild, renovate or extend all Victorian government schools.

“Up to 100 students in each year level can utilise this shared learning space and make the most of interactive whiteboards, laptops, meeting rooms and other learning tools,” she said.

“Students can often be found undertaking innovative projects both independently and in teams and there is a real sense of a learning neighbourhood.

“This concept of a learning neighbourhood is particularly important for year 7 students who are in their first year of secondary school and adjusting to life at a new school.”

Member for Macedon Joanne Duncan MP said the Brumby Government contributed more than $2.4 million to the redevelopment and the Federal Government provided $1.3 million.

“This redevelopment is further proof the Brumby Government is taking action to improve learning opportunities for Victorian students,” Ms Duncan said.
