Local jobs saved - permit for waste recycling plant

More than 20 local jobs will be saved following recommendations of an independent Advisory Committee directing Kingston Council to issue a planning permit for the Alex Fraser concrete crushing facility in Clarinda.

Planning Minister Justin Madden said issuing the permit would secure the transfer of 22 jobs from the Dingley site to the new Clarinda site. The permit will also create 50 full-time jobs during construction of the new facility.

"The permit will also create 50 full-time jobs during construction of the new facility."

“The Brumby Government is taking action to keep jobs in Victoria,” Mr Madden said.

He said the Brumby Government is also committed to waste recycling.

“I’m satisfied that potential off-site impacts can be appropriately managed given the characteristics of the site.

“The Towards Zero Waste Strategy sets state wide targets for waste reduction, litter reduction and resource recovery and specific targets and actions for Victoria’s municipal and business sectors to deliver more sustainable use of resources by 2014.”

The nearest residential zone is more than 450 metres to the north of the Clarinda site and more than 700 metres from the proposed crusher.

The crushing and screening plant and sorting facility will be located within enclosures constructed with noise reduction materials.

Previously the Clarinda site was used for sand extraction.  Extensive landscaping means that external views to the activities will be effectively obscured - more than 49,000 plants have been established on the site.

“The Advisory Committee was appointed to review the Alex Fraser Group’s permit application and provide advice as to whether a permit should be issued.

“The permit is for 15 years, and is subject to conditions which include the rehabilitation of the site,” Mr Madden said.

The Alex Fraser Group’s existing concrete crushing facility in Tootal Road, Dingley will close by the end of April 2009 and the site will be rehabilitated.

The concrete crushing facility will be at 293-315 Kingston Road, Clarinda.
