460 local jobs in major Preston redevelopment

Expressions of interest are now open for the creation of a new Preston Civic Precinct.

Planning Minister, Justin Madden, today encouraged property developers to register their interest in a development that will provide more than 460 local jobs; a range of housing opportunities; and various services and facilities in Preston.

“The Brumby Government is building strong partnerships with local government to ensure our community hubs are well placed to accommodate new job opportunities, to stimulate local economies; and to provide more services and housing choices,” Mr Madden said.

“Darebin City Council is seeking a developer to assist it in creating a mixed use precinct to create a better Melbourne and improve outcomes for the Preston community.

“This $140 million construction project will provide a major economic boost for the Preston area as well as further opportunities to stimulate private development in the future.”

The 20,000sq m site will include:
• A community hub and intercultural centre;
• Commercial office space for more than 460 jobs;
• Residential development including an affordable housing allocation;
• Provision for future council and civic facilities; and
• A range of environmentally sustainable initiatives.

Mr Madden said the Preston Civic Precinct Redevelopment will assist in renewing local infrastructure, improving local amenity and facilities and creating a fertile ground for employment and economic growth.

“I congratulate Darebin City Council on its leadership by putting its land into the mix to achieve improved outcomes for the community in line with the principles of Melbourne 2030.

“By doing this, Council has created an opportunity for developers to bring innovation to the project through their ideas,” he said.

The project is bounded by Roseberry Avenue, High St, Gower St and Kelvin Grove. It is located opposite the Preston Market which is currently slated for a $200 million private redevelopment.

The Brumby Government has committed $240,000 through its Expert Assistance Program to assist Darebin Council in finalising the Preston Civic Centre Masterplan.

The Request for Qualification Phase closes in November 2008 with a preferred development partner expected to be announced late in 2009.  A four year construction phase is expected to commence in early 2010.
