State Secretary and Campaign Director

Stephen Newnham

Stephen became State Secretary and Campaign Director of the Victorian Australian Labor Party in May 2005.

In March 2004 Stephen was appointed Assistant State Secretary of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Labor Party. Stephen joined the Australian Labor Party in 1992 and since then has been involved with the party at all levels. These include as party member, local branch Secretary, State Conference delegate, Policy Committee member and Public Office Selection Committee member.

In 1991 he was elected as State Secretary of the National Union of Students (Victorian Branch) and served in that position until the end of 1992. From April 1993 he worked for Monica Gould MLC as an electorate officer. In May 1994 he commenced working for John Brumby MLA as an electorate officer following the 1996 State Election Stephen commenced working for Sang Nguyen MLC.

After the election of the Bracks Labor Government he worked for John Brumby MLA, Treasurer and Minister for State and Regional Development as his Regional Development adviser from February 2000 to March 2002.

From March 2002 until March 2004 Stephen worked as the Senior Finance Adviser to John Lenders MLC, Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council, Minister for Finance. Since 1992 he has worked on marginal seat campaigns at every state and federal election.

Personal

Stephen grew up on the family farm in Longford and attended both Longford Primary School and Sale High School. Stephen has a young family and has been married for six years this year, he has a two and a half year old son and a ten-month old daughter. He has had a varied career in other occupations including a taxi driver, cleaner, shop assistant and librarian.
