About Gavin Jennings
GavinJennings was elected as the Member for Melbourne Province in September 1999 andre-elected at the November 2002 State Election. Following the Bracks LaborGovernment’s reforms to the Legislative Council, Gavin was elected to the SouthEastern Metropolitan Region at the 2006 State Election.
InOctober 1999 Gavin became Deputy Leader of the Government in the LegislativeCouncil and was Cabinet Secretary in the first Bracks Government. BetweenNovember 2002 and August 2007, he held the positions of Minister for Aged Care,Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Minister for Community Services.
Gavincontinues to hold the position of Deputy Leader of the Government in theLegislative Council and since August 2007 has been the Minister for theEnvironment and Climate Change and Minister for Innovation in the BrumbyGovernment.
Gavinwas born in Melbourne in April 1957. He moved with his family to countryVictoria when he was in primary school and returned to Melbourne to study atUniversity. He has a Bachelor of Arts (1978 – Monash University) and a Bachelorof Social Work (1981- Melbourne University). Gavin has one son – Huw.
Gavinhad a wide and varied work history before entering Parliament, includingexperience as a Factory Worker, Actuarial Clerk, Actor, Social Worker andPolicy Analyst. Gavin worked as a social worker at the Aboriginal HealthService in Fitzroy from 1981 to 1984.
From1988 to 1992 he was a Ministerial Advisor to Kay Setches, John Cain and JoanKirner and from 1994 to 1999 he worked as an Industrial Officer for the PublicTransport Union, Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union, and theElectrical Trades Union. Gavin’s interests include hanging out with his sonHuw, photography, films, innovation and design, supporting the Bombers andmaking – and then eating – desserts.
